8th GRADE - MEDICAL SKILLS AND SERVICES 8th GRADE (High School Credit)
Pre-Requisite: Completion of Exploration of Health Occupations 6th & 7th grade, 3.0 grade point average, positive recommendation from academic teachers, and medical instructor’s approval.
Description: This full year course exposes students to advanced scientific and laboratory techniques related to a career in the medical and allied health field. Skills representative of medical careers will be explored through hands-on activities, advanced laboratory investigations, the use of scientific techniques, medical equipment and computer software. The skills include taking vital signs, emergency first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, problem-solving and decision making.
Students will be introduced to concepts of medical science related to experimental research, basic biochemistry, anatomy & physiology, clinical microbiology and psychology. Students will participate in field trips and interview guest speakers associated with various medical careers. Students will also have a medical dictionary project, 20 hours of clinical rotations (Job Shadowing) as well as other projects that must be completed to move on to high school medical sciences.
